Bourbonnais, Ill. – Junior catcher
Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) totaled six RBI on the day with three doubles while going 6-for-6 at the plate to help lead Saint Xavier University baseball (22-16/15-7 CCAC) to a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader sweep of Olivet Nazarene University Friday afternoon at Watson Field in Bourbonnais, Ill. to begin their four-game series. Orzech was 2-for-2 with a two-run double in a 10-3 victory in game one. He finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles as the Cougars came away with an 11-1 win in the second game.
Game One:
- Graduate student outfielder Travis Hammond (Stone Mountain, Ga./Southern Wesleyan/Emmanuel/Columbus State/Chamblee) was 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double and a run scored.
- Graduate student designated hitter Gabe Kirck (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Olivet/De La Salle) went 1-for-3 with a two-run double and a walk.
- Senior outfielder Joeseph Jimenez (Palm Desert, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Palm Desert) finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI.
- Graduate student infielder Taylor Steig (Corona, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Redwoods/Santiago) collected two hits in three at-bats while scoring a run.
- Senior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) was 0-for-3, but he drew two walks, scored a run and he had an RBI.
- Graduate student pitcher Jimmy Fairley (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rock Valley/Huntley) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing nine hits, two earned runs, two walks and striking out four batters to improve to 6-1 on the mound this season.
- Junior pitcher Jarrett Kenyon (Henderson, Nev./Utah State Eastern/South Suburban/Coronado) throw an inning, giving up two hits, one earned run and posting a strikeout.
- Senior infielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles/Carbondale Community) gave SXU a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd by pulling an RBI double down the left field line.
- Saint Xavier rallied for seven runs to go up 8-0 in the top of the 4th. Hammond started the rally with an RBI single, Moore drew a bases loaded walk, Jimenez earned an RBI after a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, Orzech smacked a two-run double down the left field line and Kirck lined a two-run double to right field.
- In the top of the 6th, junior outfielder Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 9-0.
- The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI single and driving in a run on a double play. They capped the scoring with an RBI triple in the bottom of the 7th before Kenyon recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Game Two:
- Hammond went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, a double and an RBI.
- Zbozek was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a steal.
- Moore scored a pair of runs with two stolen bases and two walks while going 0-for-2.
- Senior pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) worked 6.0 innings to earn the win (5-4), scattering seven hits with one earned run, a walk and seven strikeouts.
- Redshirt freshman pitcher Jake Fenton (Chicago, Ill./Loras/Brother Rice) logged 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one hit, two walks and strikeout.
- Redshirt junior pitcher Carter Kopp (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Bishop James Mahoney) pitched the 9th with a hit-batsmen.
- Orzech laced an RBI single to left field to spot the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
- Zbrozek collected an RBI on a groundout to make it 2-0 in the top of the 2nd.
- An RBI double for Orzech push the lead to 3-0 in the top of the 3rd.
- In the top of the 4th, Hammond tallied an RBI on a groundout, and Zbrozek and Jimenez both scored on wild pitches, respectively.
- ONU scored a run in the bottom of the 4th off an RBI single.
- Kirck drove in a run on a groundout in the top of the 5th to extend the advantage to 7-1.
- Orzech hammered a two-run single back up the middle to put SXU up 9-1 in the top of the 6th.
- An error allowed a run to score in the top of the 8th and junior pinch hitter Ryan O'Farrell (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) picked up an RBI on a base hit in the top of the 9th.
Saint Xavier (22-16/15-7 CCAC) finishes the series with Olivet Nazarene with a doubleheader at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field on Saturday, April 12. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
