CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (22-18/15-9 CCAC) split its four-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) series with Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) after losing a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. The Cougars won the first two games of the series in Bourbonnais, Ill. yesterday. Senior outfielder
Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) tied his season-high with four stolen bases in a 4-3 loss in game one. Moore added two more steals, along with an RBI in a 5-3 setback in the second contest.
Game One:
- Moore was 1-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs.
- Graduate student designated hitter Gabe Kirck (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Olivet/De La Salle) finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
- Senior outfielder Joeseph Jimenez (Palm Desert, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Palm Desert) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a steal.
- Graduate student outfielder Travis Hammond (Stone Mountain, Ga./Southern Wesleyan/Emmanuel/Columbus State/Chamblee) was 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
- Junior catcher Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) drew two walks with an RBI after going 0-for-2.
- Junior pitcher Thomas Plizga (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Fremd) made the start, throwing 3.2 innings with just two hits, two earned runs, six walks and a strikeout to come away with a no decision.
- Junior pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) suffered the loss (2-1) after working 3.0 innings of relief with five hits allowed, two earned runs, a walk and four strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher/infielder Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee-Crown) recorded the final out on a fielder's choice in the top of the 7th.
- Moore, who led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, gave SXU a 1-0 lead by scoring on a wild pitch and Orzech collected an RBI on a groundout for a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the 1st.
- The Tigers cut the lead in half in the top of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly.
- ONU tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the 4th with an RBI single.
- Jimenez put Saint Xavier back ahead, 3-2, on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 5th.
- A two-out rally by Olivet Nazarene in the top of the 7th produces two runs off of back-to-back RBI base hits.
- The Cougars put two runners on after two outs in the bottom of the 7th, however a flyout ended the game.
Game Two:
- Moore had two hits in four at-bats with a double and a run scored.
- Senior infielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles/Carbondale Community) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Junior infielder Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) was 2-for-3 with a double.
- Junior infielder Beau Polickey (Oak Lawn, Ill./Heartland/Brother Rice) went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
- Sophomore catcher Victor Zaragoza (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) also was 2-for-3 with a double.
- Sophomore pitcher/infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) started, lasting 4.0 innings with six hits, four earned runs, a walk and posting three strikeouts in a losing effort (3-4).
- Parchomenko worked 3.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing five hits, one earned run and striking out four batters.
- Senior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just one hit.
- An RBI single in the top of the 1st gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
- Polickey tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI groundout. Moore put SXU up 2-1 with an RBI base hit.
- ONU re-took the lead in the top of the 5th, scoring three runs. An RBI double and a pair of RBI singles put them ahead 4-2.
- A home run in the top of the 7th extended the lead to 5-2 for Olivet Nazarene.
- Massingale lined an RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the 8th.
Saint Xavier (22-18/15-9 CCAC) travels to Charleston, Ill. to take on NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois University on Tuesday, April 15 for a nine-inning non-conference contest. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
