CHICAGO – The No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team (26-0/12-0 CCAC) wrapped up the regular season with an undefeated record, the first team at SXU to go undefeated in the regular season since the 2010 edition of the Saint Xavier football program that went 11-0, after the Cougars defeated Indiana Institute of Technology in three sets (25-19, 28-26, 33-31) in non-conference action Friday evening at the Schaefer Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) posted a match-high 21 kills on a stellar .432 attack percentage (21-5-37) with seven digs, six assists and two blocks (one solo). SXU earns a bye in the upcoming Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament that begins on Tuesday, April 15, hosting a semifinal match on April 17.
SXU registered a team attack percentage of .433 (55-10-104), their eighth match with an attack percentage of .400 or better. With 55 kills in the match, Saint Xavier sets a program record for kills in a three-set match, breaking the old mark of 53 set three times, most recently last Saturday against Lourdes University (Ohio). Their 54 assists are also a new school record, besting the previous high in a three-set match of 51 at Judson University (Ill.) on February 22, 2021.
- Redshirt senior outside hitter Vejas Cuplinskas (Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfield) came away with a career-high 18 kills on a phenomenal .533 attack percentage (18-2-30). He also had two service aces, a block and a dig.
- Sophomore outside hitter Caydann Cox (Jamestown, N.D./Jamestown/Jamestown) tallied 13 kills on an efficient .370 attack percentage (13-3-27) with four blocks, four digs, three aces and three assists.
- Sophomore setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) handed out a match-leading 42 assists, adding seven digs, four blocks (one solo) and a service ace.
- Junior libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) scooped up a match-high 18 digs, his third-highest total of the season.
- Graduate student middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) tied his season-high with a match-best 8 blocks. It was a season-high in block assists for Ehlers, he also recorded eight blocks with two solos against Mount Mercy University on January 31. He also had two kills, an ace and an assist.
No. 2 Saint Xavier (26-0/12-0 CCAC) returns to the Shannon Center for the CCAC Tournament Semifinals on Thursday, April 17. Time and opponent are to be determined.
