No. 2 SXU Celebrates ‘Senior Night’ with CCAC Championship

CHICAGO – The No. 2 Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team (25-0/12-0 CCAC) concluded its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule with a 12-0 record after defeating Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in three sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-16) Tuesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. The Cougars have now the CCAC Regular Season Championship five consecutive seasons and they finished conference play undefeated for the second year in a row, and the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Before the match, SXU recognized seven seniors on 'Senior Night.' Graduate student middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), redshirt senior outside hitter Vejas Cuplinskas (Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfield), senior outside hitter Sean Carey (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), senior middle blocker Alessandro Gianotti (Desio, Italy/BYU/Leonardo Da Vinci), senior outside hitter Kegan Olig (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac), senior middle blocker/opposite hitter Joseph Peter (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) and senior opposite hitter/setter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco).
  • Pennala recorded a match-best 14 kills on a phenomenal .684 attack percentage (14-1-19), adding six digs, three blocks (one solo), two assists and a service ace.
  • Sophomore setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) dished out a match-high 33 assists with four digs, an ace and a kill.
  • Cuplinskas tallied eight kills, five digs, an assist and a service ace.
  • Olig posted seven kills, five digs and a block.
  • Carey collected six kills, two digs and a block.
  • Junior libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) came away with six digs and two assists.
  • Ehlers registered four blocks (two solos), three kills, an ace and a dig.
  • Peter added his first collegiate dig and a kill.
No. 2 Saint Xavier (25-0/12-0 CCAC) wraps up the regular season with a match against Indiana Tech University on Friday, April 11. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 pm central start in Fort Wayne, Ind.
