Offense Carries SXU Baseball in DH Sweep of Judson

Elgin, Ill. – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (20-16/13-7 CCAC) pounded out 25 hits, stole 24 bases on 26 attempts, and the Cougars totaled 31 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Judson University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday afternoon at Hoffer Field in Elgin, Ill. Graduate student infielder Gabe Kirck (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Olivet/De La Salle) bashed a pair of home runs, collecting four RBI and graduate student infielder Taylor Steig (Corona, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Redwoods/Santiago) also drove in four runs in a 13-8 victory in game one. Senior outfielder Joeseph Jimenez (Palm Desert, Calif./Olivet Nazarene/Palm Desert) tallied a season-high five RBI on four hits and homered, finishing with four RBI as SXU scored eight runs in the top of the 9th to pull away for an 18-9 triumph in game two.

Game One:
  • Kirck finished 2-for-5, while Steig was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Sophomore infielder/pitcher Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) also slugged a pair of home runs, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Senior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs scored and his team-leading seventh triple of the season.
  • Senior infielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles/Carbondale Community) was 0-for-1; however, he drew four walks, stole three bases and he scored a run.
  • Jimenez had a hit in two at-bats, with three steals, two walks, an RBI and a run.
  • Junior pitcher Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) made his first start of the season, going 2.1 innings. He allowed no hits, four runs (three earned) two walks and a strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) earned the win in relief (2-0) after working 3.0 innings with five hits given up, four runs (two earned) and a strikeout.
  • Senior pitcher/infielder Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee-Crown) picked up his second save of the year, throwing 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, with one hit and a walk.
  • Orzech lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the 1st to give Saint Xavier an early lead.
  • Dreier smacked a solo home run in the top of the 2nd, Jimenez hit a sac fly and Steig hit a bases-clearing double to extend the advantage to 6-0.
  • The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd off a Cougar miscue.
  • JU cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the 3rd on a two-run single with an error allowing another run to score, along with an RBI to make it 6-5.
  • Dreier belted his seventh home run of the season in the top of the 5th.
  • Judson tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run.
  • In the top of the 6th, Kirck clubbed a two-run home run to put SXU back up 9-7.
  • The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI base hit.
  • SXU rallied for four runs in the top of the 7th when Steig hit into an RBI fielder's choice with Moore and Jimenez scoring on the play. Kirck cracked his team-leading 11th home run to drive in Steig to cap the scoring.
Game Two:
  • Jimenez was 4-for-5 overall, stealing three bases, scoring three runs and drawing a walk.
  • Moore collected four hits in seven at-bats with four runs, three RBI, two doubles and two stolen bases.
  • Orzech finished 2-for-3 with two walks and a steal.
  • Steig went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.
  • Graduate student outfielder Travis Hammond (Stone Mountain, Ga./Southern Wesleyan/Emmanuel/Columbus State/Chamblee) was 1-for-2 with two runs, two walks and an RBI.
  • Sophomore pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) started for the second time this year, lasting 3.0 innings with three hits, five earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
  • Senior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) was the winning pitcher (2-1) after logging 3.0 innings with five hits allowed, two runs and a pair of strikeouts.
  • Sophomore pitcher/infielder John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) threw an inning of relief, giving up two hits and a run.
  • Parchomenko made his second appearance of the day, tossing 1.1 innings with two hits, a run and a strikeout.
  • Redshirt freshman pitcher Jake Fenton (Chicago, Ill./Loras/Brother Rice) finished the game, posting 0.2 innings with a hit, a walk and two strikeouts.
  • Jimenez and Orzech hit RBI singles in the top of the 1st for an early advantage.
  • JU responded with three runs in the home half of the 1st on a two-run double and an RBI groundout.
  • Jimenez tied the game in the top of the 2nd and a passed ball allowed Moore to score for a 4-3 lead.
  • Judson re-took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring on a balk and a sacrifice fly to go up 5-4.
  • In the top of the 4th, Orzech drew a bases loaded walk to square the game at 5-5.
  • An RBI fielder's choice put the Eagles back on top, 6-5, in the bottom of the 5th.
  • The Cougars plated five runs in the top of the 7th to carry a 10-7 lead. Hammond drew a bases loaded walk, Moore laced a two-run single, Hammond scored on a balk and Jimenez lined an RBI single.
  • JU hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th and they hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th to pull within one run, 10-9.
  • SXU pulled away in the top of the 9th, scoring eight runs. Moore slugged an RBI double, Jimenez rapped a two-run single, Orzech blasted a three-run home run and Steig hammered a two-run double.
Saint Xavier (20-16/13-7 CCAC) makes its way to Bourbonnais, Ill. to start a four-game series with Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Friday, April 11 with a doubleheader. Game one is tabbed for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
