CHICAGO – Junior catcher
Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) from the Saint Xavier University baseball team (33-24/20-12 CCAC) was named a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic Second Team All-American when the awards were announced Tuesday afternoon. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher, have started or played at least 66.7 percent of their team's games and be a sophomore or higher. Orzech joins his older brother Evan (2020-24), who also claimed CSC Academic Second Team All-American recognition last season. He is now the fourth player in program history to be named a CSC Academic All-American, along with Garrett Bright (2016-19), who was a Second Team selection after 2019, and Ben Zordani (2017-20), another Second Team honoree in 2020.
From the academicallamerica.com website: the Academic All-District team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. CSC divides the honorees into four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
- Orzech majors in Exercise Science and has a 4.00 GPA in the classroom.
- He was an All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) First Team selection and was named the CCAC Player of the Week on April 15. Orzech also earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors for the second year in a row, as well as CCAC All-Academic recognition and CSC Academic All-District. He led the Cougars with a .413 batting average (57-for-138) while playing and starting 45 of the team's 57 games.
- Orzech had a .539 on-base percentage and a .710 slugging percentage for an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of 1.249. He led SXU with 17 doubles, along with 98 total bases, 48 RBI, 23 walks, 17 hit-by-pitches, 14 runs, eight home runs and was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. Orzech had a .991 fielding percentage on 214 attempts (188 putouts, 24 assists and two errors), he nabbed 15 would-be base stealers on 50 attempts (30.0 percent) and was a part of two double plays.
- Orzech helped lead Saint Xavier to a share of the CCAC regular season championship and the CCAC Tournament Championship, along with the team's best finish in the NAIA Opening Round, a third-place draw in the Lawrenceville (Ga.) Bracket, since 2009.
