Hul Nets Game-winning Goal in 1-0 Win for SXU over Cornerstone

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Junior midfielder Mark Vitaliy Hul (Ternopil, Ukraine/Moraine Valley/TSSH No. 29) scored his first goal as a member of the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (1-1, 0-0 CCAC) to guide the Cougars to a 1-0 triumph over Cornerstone University (Mich.) Wednesday evening at the CU Soccer Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) made three saves to record his second career shutout as his defenders limited the host Golden Eagles to eight shot attempts. SXU finished the match with 18 shot attempts, with nine coming in each half.
  • Hul peppered CU with eight shot attempts on the night and collecting four shots on goal in 81 minutes of action.
  • Redshirt senior forward Jaedan Aguilera (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) posted his first assists of the season, coming away with two shot attempts and one shot on goal in 86 minutes on the pitch.
  • Redshirt junior midfielder Mauri Martinez (Chicago, Ill./Argo Community) and redshirt sophomore midfielder Saul Lagunas (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) each finished with two shot attempts and one shot on goal, respectively.
  • Sophomore forward Diego Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Hope Academy) had a shot on goal in 19 minutes off of the bench.
  • Both squads had scoring chances before Aguilera setup Hul for the game-winning tally in the 35th minute.
  • Martinez made a pair of saves in the first 10 minutes of play and kept the 1-0 advantage for Saint Xavier by stopping a header shot attempt in the 71st minute.
Saint Xavier (1-1/0-0 CCAC) returns to Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field to host Indiana University Columbus on Monday, September 1. The match is slated for a 12:30 start.
