Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) established a new career high in saves, stopping 12 shots, however Saint Xavier University men's soccer (5-2-1, 0-0 CCAC) completed the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 1-1 draw against Huntington University (Ind.) Saturday evening at King Stadium in Huntington, Ind. Martinez topped his old mark of 11 saves set in the previous match, a 3-2 win over NCAA Division II Purdue University Northwest last Tuesday at Bruce R. Deaton Field in Chicago, Ill. The host Foresters outshot the Cougars by a 24-5 margin.
- Senior midfielder Pedro Guzman (Burbank, Ill./Moraine Valley/Reavis) scored his second goal of the season on his only shot attempt in 66 minutes off the bench.
- Junior midfielder/forward Yael Diaz (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Hubbard) tallied his team-leading third assist and he had a shot attempt.
- Sophomore forward Cristian Morales (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) made his first start of the year, and he led SXU with a pair of shots with one shot on goal.
- Martinez made four saves in the first half to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
- In the 86th minute of action, Guzman received a pass from Diaz and drilled a shot past the goalie to put Saint Xavier up 1-0.
- Martinez made three saves in a minute span in the final two minutes, yet with just seven second remaining in the contest, Huntington tied the match after a corner kick was sent in.
Saint Xavier (5-2-1/0-0 CCAC) begins Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field when they host Viterbo University (Wis.) on Wednesday, September 24. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
