Saint Xavier Men’s Soccer Defeats Governors State, 4-2

Hammond, Ind. – The Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (6-3-1, 1-1 CCAC) earned its first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory of the season after they came away with a 4-2 triumph over Governors State University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind. Sophomore forward Diego Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Hope Academy) netted the game-winning goal, and he added an assist on the Cougars' first goal of the match. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Saul Lagunas (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) was credited with a pair of assists. Freshman goalkeeper Guillermo Vences (Alsip, Ill./Eisenhower) made his first collegiate appearance and start, earning the win after he made nine saves for SXU.
  • Fifth year senior midfielder Francisco Espinoza (Lansing, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/T.F. South) tallied his first goal of the year, finishing the match with three shot attempts and a shot on goal.
  • Redshirt senior forward Jaedan Aguilera (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) recorded his team-leading sixth goal of the 2025 campaign. He also had three shot attempts with one shot on goal.
  • Fifth year senior midfielder Saul Camacho (Summit, Ill./Elmhurst/St. Laurence) registered a goal after he had two shot attempts.
  • Espinoza gave Saint Xavier an early lead after he took a pass from Garcia and sent a shot past the goalkeeper in the third minute.
  • In the 10th minute, Aguilera added to the lead when he scored after he was set up by Lagunas.
  • The Jaguars got on the board in the 30th minute to cut the deficit in half.
  • Governors State squared the match at 2-2 in the 62nd minute.
  • Garcia scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute, receiving a pass from Lagunas. It was Garcia's third goal of the season, while Lagunas collected his first two assists of the year.
  • Camacho added an insurance goal, scoring his second goal of the season in the 80th minute.
Saint Xavier (6-3-1/1-1 CCAC) makes the short trip to Palos Heights, Ill. to play Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a conference match-up on Tuesday, September 30. The match is set for a 3:30 pm start.
