SXU Men’s Soccer Clipped by Illinois-Chicago, 1-0

CHICAGO – A goal in the 48th minute was the difference in a 1-0 for Saint Xavier University men's soccer (5-8-1/1-2-1 CCAC) to NCAA Division I University of Illinois-Chicago Saturday evening in non-conference play at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) collected a season-high 10 saves for the Cougars. It was the fourth time in his career that he has made 10 or more saves in a match.
  • Fifth-year senior forward Dorian Mahone (Carol Stream, Ill./Willowbrook) recorded a team-leading two shot attempts with one shot on goal in 75 minutes on the pitch.
  • Freshman midfielder Kajetan Mlynarski (Warsaw, Poland/Lelewel) had a shot on goal, just his third of the year, while playing the full 90 minutes.
  • Junior forward Cristian Morales (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) registered a shot on goal as well in 22 minutes as a reserve.
  • Junior forward Americo Castaneda (Blue Island, Ill./Mt. Carmel) added a shot attempt in the closing seconds. He booked 68 minutes of playing time.
  • Martinez stopped six shots in the first half, keeping the score knotted at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes of action. He made two saves in the opening minutes of the second half, however a shot got past him in the 48th minute for the lone tally.
  • Mahone and Morales has good looks on net for the equalizer in the 53rd and 66th minutes, respectively, but their shots were saved by the Flames goalkeeper.
Saint Xavier (5-8-1/1-2-1 CCAC) resumes Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play when they host Indiana University Northwest at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field on Tuesday, October 20. The match is set for a 7:00 pm start.
