Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) tallied 14 kills and junior outside hitter
Caydann Cox (Helena, Mont./Jamestown/Jamestown) added 13 kills in a three-set win (25-19, 25-16, 25-19) over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest to start the day. The Cougars tied the single-match program record with 16 service aces to a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-16, 25-20) over Cornerstone University (Mich.) in the final match of the day. It was the seventh time that they had 16 service aces in a match, and the first time since last February 22 at home vs. Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Freshman middle blocker
Hayden Grange (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) collected a career-high five aces against the Golden Eagles, and six on the day, giving him a team-leading 22 on the season. The Fighting Bees topped Cornerstone in three sets in the middle match.
Match One:
- Pennala added seven digs, two assists and a service ace.
- Cox posted a .455 attack percentage (13-3-22) with five digs, three blocks (two solos) and an ace.
- Junior setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) issued a match-best 37 assists with six digs, two kills and a block.
- Freshman outsider hitter Owen Krause (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) posted eight kills and three digs.
- Senior libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) came away with a match-leading 10 digs, his fifth match with 10 or more digs this season. He also had three assists.
- Grange totaled four kills, two blocks (one solo), a dig and a service ace.
- Senior middle blocker Tysen Myers (Apple Valley, Minn./Jamestown/Eastview) had four kills as well, adding a block and a dig.
- Freshman outside hitter Henry Truitt (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) posted three digs and a pair of aces.
Match Two:
- Pennala logged a phenomenal .588 attack percentage (12-2-17) coming away with a match-high 12 kills. He also had four digs and three service aces.
- Daniels handed out 29 assists with five digs, two aces, two blocks (one solo) and two kills.
- Cox registered nine kills, three digs, a block and a service ace.
- Myers finished with six kills on a .556 attack percentage (6-1-9) and a block.
- Velez scooped up a match-best seven digs, adding a pair of assists.
- Grange chipped in two digs.
- Freshman outside hitter Bernardo Kumm (Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil/Colegio Maua) collected three digs, three kills, an ace and a solo block.
- Freshman middle blocker Nikolay Kotevski (Sofia, Bulgaria/Britanica Park School) recorded three kills and a block.
- Krause chipped in two kills, two service aces and a dig, while Truitt also had two aces.
No. 2 Saint Xavier (10-2/0-0 CCAC) takes on Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in CCAC action at the Shannon Center on Monday, February 23. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
