No. 2 SXU Hosts Block Party, Topping No. 15 WPU in Three Sets

CHICAGO – The No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team (4-2/0-0 CCAC) recorded a season-high 12.0 blocks (one solo and 22 assists) with three players each collecting five apiece, to come away with a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) over No. 15 William Penn University (Iowa) in an NAIA Top 15 match-up Saturday afternoon on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Junior outside hitter Caydann Cox (Helena, Mont./Jamestown/Jamestown), freshman middle blocker Nikolay Kotevski (Sofia, Bulgaria/Britanica Park School) and senior middle blocker Tysen Myers (Apple Valley, Minn./Jamestown/Eastview) all had five blocks, with Tyers adding a solo block. It's the second time in the last four matches that the Cougars had 10.0 or blocks in a match when they had 11.0 in their home-opening win over No. 3 St. Thomas University (Fla.) on January 29. The win sets a program record for consecutive wins, four, over ranked opponents.
  • Graduate student opposite hitter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) posted a match-high tying 10 kills, adding three digs, two blocks, two digs and two service aces.
  • Cox finished with nine kills, four digs and two aces. Myers had six kills, and Kotevski added three kills.
  • Junior setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) tallied a match-best 31 assists, his fourth straight match with 30 or more assists, six digs, two kills and two blocks.
  • Senior libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) scooped up a match-leading nine digs along with an assist.
  • Freshman outside hitter Owen Krause (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) had five kills on a .556 attack percentage (5-0-9), a season-high four blocks and a dig.
  • Graduate student defensive specialist/libero Avery Chick (Newcastle, Wyo./Bethel/Campbellsville/Newcastle) logged a season-best five digs with his first assist of the year.
  • Freshman middle blocker Hayden Grange (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) added a service ace, his sixth consecutive match with an ace.
No. 2 Saint Xavier (5-2/0-0 CCAC) plays NCAA Division II Roosevelt University (Ill.) at the Shannon Center on Tuesday, February 10. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
