Pennala Hits Milestone; No. 2 SXU Sweeps at SAU Tri-Match

Davenport, Iowa – Graduate student opposite hitter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) collected 33 kills on the day, a match-leading 19 in a four-set Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory (25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 25-17) over host St. Ambrose University (Iowa) and a match-best 14 kills in a three-set triumph (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) over No. 12 Bethel University (Ind.) for No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University men's volleyball (20-3/9-0 CCAC) at the St. Ambrose Tri-Match Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, Iowa. With his kill total, Pennala became the first player in program history to surpass 1,000 or more career kills. He now as 1,013 in his three seasons with the Cougars. Earlier this month, Pennala broke the career kills record that was held by former standout and NAIA All-American Grant Ooms (2020-22), who had 908.

Match One:
  • Pennala finished with a stellar .424 attack percentage (19-5-33), four blocks, two digs, an assist and a service ace.
  • Junior outside hitter Caydann Cox (Helena, Mont./Jamestown/Jamestown) kept pace with his teammate, posting 18 kills on a phenomenal .455 attack percentage (18-3-33). He added six digs, three blocks and two aces.
  • Junior setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) coordinated the offensive attack, handing out 55 assists, along with four digs, four service aces, two blocks and a kill.
  • Senior middle blocker Tysen Myers (Apple Valley, Minn./Jamestown/Eastview) continued his strong play at the net, coming away with eight kills and a team-best five blocks.
  • Senior libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) scooped up a match-high tying 13 digs with three assists and an ace.
  • Freshman middle blocker Hayden Grange (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) logged a .600 attack percentage (7-1-10) with seven kills, as well as three blocks and a dig.
  • Freshman outside hitter Bernardo Kumm (Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil/Colegio Maua) recorded five kills, two blocks and two digs.
  • Junior opposite hitter/outside hitter Donte Jennings (Spokane Valley, Wash./Morningside/Jamestown/Central Valley) chipped in two kills, a dig and a solo block.
Match Two:
  • Pennala posted his third double-double of the campaign as he added 11 digs to go along with a .522 attack percentage (14-2-23), three blocks, three service aces and an assist.
  • Cox collected 12 kills, three blocks and two digs.
  • Daniels tallied 38 assists, five digs and three kills.
  • Grange registered six kills, a match-leading four aces and a block.
  • Myers had five kills and a team-best four blocks.
  • Jennings came away with six digs, three kills and a service ace, while Velez added four digs in the win.
No. 2 Saint Xavier (20-3/9-0 CCAC) returns to the Shannon Center to play Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a CCAC contest on Tuesday, March 24. First serve is slated for 7:00 pm in Chicago, Ill.
