Saint Xavier Baseball Splits DH with Judson

CHICAGO – Freshman infielder Trevor Corbett (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) hit a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the top of the 7th and freshman designated hitter Kaleb Navarro (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) belted his first collegiate home run for added insurance in an 8-5 victory in game two to help Saint Xavier University baseball (15-9/6-4 CCAC) come away with a doubleheader split with Judson University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday afternoon at Hoffer Field in Elgin, Ill. Senior infielder Beau Polickey (Oak Lawn, Ill./Heartland/Brother Rice) collected an RBI in a 3-1 setback to the Eagles in game one. Senior pitcher Nick Krueger (Clifton, Ill./Danville Area/Clifton Central) earned the win in the second game after he threw 4.0 innings of relief to move is record to 2-1 on the mound this season.

Game One:
  • Navarro hit a pinch-hit double with a run and a stolen base.
  • Junior outfielder Ben Meier (Beechwood, Ky./Lincoln Trail/Beechwood) was 1-for-2 with a walk and a steal.
  • Corbett had a hit in four at-bats.
  • Sophomore pitcher Tyler Deluca (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community) made his first collegiate start, going 6.0 innings and allowing eight hits, one earned run and striking out six batters. His overall record dropped to 0-2 on the season.
  • Junior pitcher Richard Gomez (Chicago, Ill./Parkland/Concordia/St. Laurence) worked 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, surrendering two hits, two earned runs and two walks.
  • JU broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI double.
  • Judson added two more runs in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI walk and an RBI base hit.
  • Polickey picked up his sixth RBI of the season with an RBI groundout to score Navarro.
Game Two:
  • Senior outfielder Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
  • Junior infielder John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) was 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, an RBI and a steal.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Parker Violett (Maple Park, Ill./Kaneland) had two hits in three trips to the plate with two RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored.
  • Corbett drew two walks while going 1-for-2 with a steal.
  • Navarro had a hit in four at-bats.
  • Senior pitcher Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) made the start, tossing 3.0 innings with three hits, three earned runs and three walks.
  • Krueger had a final line of 4.0 innings, seven hits, two earned runs and a strikeout.
  • The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on an SXU miscue and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Cougars tied the game in the top of the 2nd, scoring on a wild pitch and an error.
  • Violett lifted a sac fly to give SXU a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3rd.
  • JU re-tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on a home run.
  • In the top of the 5th, Simecek hammered an RBI double and Violett drove in a run with an RBI single.
  • Judson rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.
  • Violett reached base with two outs via an error in the top of the 7th, and stole second to spark the three-run rally.
Saint Xavier (15-9/6-4 CCAC) starts a four-game series with University of St. Francis (Ill.) with a doubleheader on Friday, March 27 in Joliet, Ill. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
