Michko Powers SXU Baseball Past Judson in DH Sweep

CHICAGO – Redshirt freshman infielder Jackson Michko (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) slugged three home runs with six RBI in game one and junior infielder Max Waszkiewicz (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) tripled with two RBI in game two to help the Saint Xavier University Baseball team (23-11/14-6) earn a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader sweep of Judson University (Ill.) Wednesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Junior pitcher Richard Gomez (Chicago, Ill./Parkland/Concordia/St. Laurence) came away with his first win for the Cougars (1-1), pitching 2.2 innings of relief, and senior pitcher Nick Krueger (Clifton, Ill./Danville Area/Clifton Central) picked up his first save of the year in an 8-4 win in the first game. Senior catcher Aaron Orzech (Streamwood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) also had two RBI & senior pitcher Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) recorded his team-leading fifth win of the season (5-1) in 3.0 innings out of the bullpen in another 8-4 triumph in game two.

Michko became only the fifth player in team history to belt three home runs in a game, joining his teammate, junior infielder John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), who did so on March 8 in game one of a doubleheader vs. St. Ambrose University (Iowa) at Ferrell Field.
Game One:
  • Michko finished 4-for-4 with an RBI single as well.
  • Orzech went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Freshman infielder Trevor Corbett (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) doubled with a run scored, going 1-for-4.
  • Senior designated hitter Ryan O'Farrell (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, a run, and a hit-by-pitch.
  • Senior pitcher Thomas Plizga (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Fremd) made the start, throwing 3.0 innings with a hit and a strikeout.
  • Gomez allowed four hits, four runs (two earned), three walks and three strikeouts.
  • Krueger earned the 'old-school' save after pitching 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit with three strikeouts.
  • SXU took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st with a two-out rally. Corbett doubled, and scored, on an RBI single off the bat of Orzech and Michko hammered a three-run home run over the wall in left center.
  • The Eagles cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the 4th, scoring a pair of unearned runs on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
  • Michko led off the bottom of the 4th with a solo shot, again to left center.
  • JU plated a run in the top of the 5th on an RBI single.
  • An error brought in a run for Judson in the top of the 6th. With two outs and the bases loaded, Krueger came into the game and struck out the batter on three pitches.
  • In the next half inning, Michko launched his third home run of the game and O'Farrell scored on a wild pitch.
  • Michko capped the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th.
Game Two:
  • Waszkiewicz was 2-for-4 overall with a run scored and Orzech added a double.
  • Junior outfielder Ben Meier (Beechwood, Ky./Lincoln Trail/Beechwood) swiped four bases with a run scored, finishing 1-for-2.
  • Sophomore outfielder Parker Violett (Maple Park, Ill./Kaneland) went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, an RBI and a walk.
  • Senior outfielder Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) had two hits in four at-bats with two runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Senior infielder Beau Polickey (Oak Lawn, Ill./Heartland/Brother Rice) hit a go-ahead RBI single, adding a double and a run scored while going 2-for-3.
  • Corbett was 1-for-3 with an RBI sac fly.
  • Junior pitcher Cole Martz (Huntington, Ind./Kankakee/Huntington North) opened the game, throwing 2.0 innings with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Burns logged 3.0 innings of relief, scattering five hits with two runs (both unearned) and striking out two batters.
  • Redshirt freshman pitcher Ethan Godlewski (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tossed 2.0 innings with two hits, two earned runs, a walk and a strikeout.
  • Violett broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • The Eagles tied the game in the top of the 4th on a two-out RBI base hit.
  • Saint Xavier rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Polickey hit an RBI single back up the middle with the infield drawn in, Waszkiewicz lined a two-run triple, Corbett lifted a sacrifice fly and Orzech clubbed an RBI double.
  • JU got a run back in the top of the 5th with a home run.
  • A run scored off an error and Orzech drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 6th to extend the lead to 8-2.
  • Judson hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the 7th before Godlewski rolled a pair of ground ball outs to secure the win.
Saint Xavier (23-11/14-6 CCAC) begins a four-game home and home series with a doubleheader against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) at Ferrell Field on Friday, April 10. Game one is slated for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
