SXU Women’s Soccer Edged by Aquinas, 3-2

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Junior forward Cami Butler (Tinley Park, Ill./Roosevelt/Lincoln-Way East) scored a goal on her first shot as a Cougar and sophomore midfielder Paige Swaw (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) tallied her first goal of the 2026 season, however the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team (1-2, 0-0 CCAC) lost a non-conference contest to Aquinas College (Mich.) Wednesday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich. Senior forward Alex Jonaitis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) assisted on both SXU goals, earning her first two assists of the new campaign.
  • Jonaitis played the full 90 minutes, coming away with a team-leading three shots on goal on three shot attempts.
  • Butler, who logged 82 minutes in her Saint Xavier debut, had two shots on goal on two shot attempts.
  • Swaw had two shots on goal as well while playing the full time.
  • Junior midfielder Camila Barragan (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Hope Academy) and sophomore midfielder Valerie Nelson (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) each had a shot on goal, respectively.
  • Senior goalkeeper Natalie Dybas (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) collected nine saves for the Cougars, six stops coming in the second half.
  • After a pair of saves in the first 12 minutes by Dybas, junior forward Karly Harkness (Oak Lawn, Ill./Bethel/Downers Grove North) had her shot hit the crossbar in the 14th minute.
  • Aquinas broke the scoreless tie in the 35th minute on an unassisted goal.
  • Saint Xavier had three changes before halftime, including one in the closing second by Barragan, but all three were turned away.
  • The Saints scored just two seconds into the second half to go up 2-0 in the 46th minute.
  • Jonaitis connected with Butler to get the Cougars on the board in the 56th minute of play.
  • An unassisted goal by AC in the 63rd minute gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage.
  • In the 84th minute, Swaw took a pass from Jonaitis and she would find the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • 90 seconds later, Jonaitis' equalizing attempt was stopped by the Aquinas goalkeeper in the 86th minute.
Saint Xavier (1-2/0-0 CCAC) returns to Michigan for another Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC)/Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) crossover when they take on No. 21 Spring Arbor University (Mich.) on Wednesday, September 2. The match is set for a 6:00 pm central start in Spring Arbor, Mich.
