Late Rally Falls Short for SXU in 2-1 loss to Huntington

CHICAGO – A header from the top of the six-yard box by senior midfielder/forward Yael Diaz (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Hubbard) in the 86th minute got Saint Xavier University men's soccer (4-5/0-0 CCAC) on the board, however SXU's late rush to find the equalizer came up short in a 2-1 setback to Huntington University in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Diaz took a pass from freshman midfielder Kajetan Mlynarski (Warsaw, Poland/Lelewel) from 30 yards out on the right side and found the back of the net in the lower right corner. For Diaz, it was his team-leading fifth goal of the campaign, while Mlynarski picked up his team-high second assist. The loss snaps the Cougars' four-match home win-streak.
  • Diaz recorded a team-best four shot attempts with three shots on goal in 90 minutes of play.
  • Fifth-year senior forward Dorian Mahone (Carol Stream, Ill./Willowbrook) tallied three shot attempts and a shot on goal in 70 minutes of action.
  • Mlynarski added two shot attempts and a shot on goal while playing the full time.
  • Redshirt senior goalkeeper Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) made a pair of saves for Saint Xavier.
  • The Foresters took a 1-0 lead into halftime after a 30-yard strike bested Martinez into the upper right corner in the 44th minute.
  • A foul inside the six-yard box setup a penalty kick chance for Huntington in the 48th minute, which was converted for a 2-0 advantage.
  • SXU put the pressure on the rest of the half, leading to Diaz's goal.
  • In the 88th minute, a corner kick gave Mlynarski a chance on net, but his shot was blocked. The rebound came out to junior forward Americo Castaneda (Blue Island, Ill./Mt. Carmel) but his shot hit the crossbar.
Saint Xavier (4-5/0-0 CCAC) takes the week off to prepare for Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) competition when they travel to Elgin, Ill. to face Judson University (Ill.) on Saturday, September 26. The match is scheduled for a 2:30 start.
