CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (5-6/1-1 CCAC) earned its first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory after a 2-0 triumph over Governors State University (Ill.) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex in University Park, Ill. Saul Lagunas (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) scored the game-winning goal, his second goal of the season, junior forward
Cristian Morales (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) netted his first goal of the year, and redshirt senior goalkeeper
Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) made five saves for his second clean sheet of the 2026 campaign.
- Fifth-year senior forward Dorian Mahone (Carol Stream, Ill./Willowbrook) led the Cougars with five shot attempts and four shots on goal in 54 minutes on the pitch.
- Lagunas, Morales, and senior defender Fabian Montes (Hammond, Ind./Prairie State/Hammond) each had two shots and one shot on goal, respectively. Junior forward Diego Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Hope Academy) had two shot attempts as well.
- SXU controlled the pace in the first half, outshooting the Jaguars 12-3. However, the match was scoreless at halftime.
- Just over two minutes after the break, Lagunas took a pass from junior midfielder/forward Eduardo Perez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence), and he found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. It was the first assist this season for Perez.
- Saint Xavier went up 2-0 in the 61st minute off a set piece on a corner kick off the foot of freshman midfielder Kajetan Mlynarki (Warsaw, Poland/Lelewel) who connected with Morales. Mlynarksi picked up his team-leading third assist of the season.
Saint Xavier (5-6/1-1 CCAC) returns to Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field to host University of St. Francis (Ill.) in CCAC action on Saturday, October 3. The match is slated for a 1:30 pm kickoff.
