Saint Xavier Swept at AMF Memorial Tournament

Upland, Ind. – The Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (0-10, 0-1 CCAC) suffered three defeats at the AMF Memorial Tournament hosted by Taylor University (Ind.) this weekend in Upland, Ind. The Cougars played twice on Friday, losing to Indiana University East in three sets (14-25, 20-25, 10-25) in the afternoon and falling to the No. 14 ranked host Trojans in three sets (8-25, 13-25, 13-25) in the evening. SXU was in the early morning match on Saturday, starting at 7:00 am central, and they were upended by Campbellsville University (Ky.) in four sets (15-25, 12-25, 25-20, 16-25). Sophomore right side Ella O'Neill (Orland Park, Ill./Edgewood/Andrew) collected 22 kills with two digs and a block for Saint Xavier, leading the team in kills in the final two matches.

Match one:
  • Senior middle blocker Delaney Panozzo (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) finished with a team-best four kills.
  • Senior outside hitter Aalyssa Gunn (Orlando, Fla./Trinity Christian/Orlando Christian Prep) collected five digs, three kills and a service ace.
  • O'Neill posted three kills and a block assist.
  • Freshman middle blocker Addison Hoeniges (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) logged two kills, as did senior outside hitter Kaylee Born (Plainfield, Ill./Oswego East).
  • Junior libero Taylor Vann (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) came away with a team-high eight digs while adding an ace and an assist.
  • Sophomore setter Vianne Villa (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) made her collegiate debut, leading the Cougars with five assists and scooping up three digs.
  • Junior setter Raeley Mungcal (Tinley Park, Ill./Benedictine/Tinley Park) had four assists and a pair of digs.
  • Junior outside hitter Lauren Ahlstedt (Roselle, Ill./Harper/Lake Park) totaled three digs and a kill.
  • Junior defensive specialist Yuvia Velasquez (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) recorded five digs and an assist, while junior middle blocker Eva Wintersteen (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) added a block assist and a kill.
Match Two:
  • Senior setter Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) issued 22 assists with eight digs and two service aces.
  • O'Neill collected a team-high eight kills, and Gunn added five kills.
  • Vann produced a team-best 11 digs while adding an assist.
  • Hoeniges registered six kills and a dig, while Born chipped in four kills and three digs.
  • Mungcal tallied five digs with four assists.
  • Velasquez finished with five digs, and freshman defensive specialist Emma Smola (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) added four digs, respectively.
Match Three:
  • O'Neill equalled her season-high with 11 kills and she added a pair of digs.
  • Hoeniges came away with a career-high 10 kills on a .389 attack percentage (10-3-18) and she had two blocks.
  • Opilka registered her third double-double of the season, collecting season-highs in assists (29) and digs (11). She also had an ace, a block and a kill.
  • Gunn totaled eight digs, seven kills, a service ace and a solo block.
  • Panozzo also had a solo block while adding three kills.
  • Junior middle blocker Ellie Graf (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Christian) finished with three kills as well, adding a pair of digs.
  • Born booked two kills, an ace and a dig, while Ahlstedt added two digs, a kill, a block and service ace.
Saint Xavier (0-10/0-1 CCAC) travels to Joliet, Ill. to take on University of St. Francis (Ill.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest on Tuesday, September 8. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
