Saint Xavier Baseball Falls to Georgetown in Twin Bill

Millington, Tenn. – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (0-5/0-0 CCAC) lost both games of a doubleheader to Georgetown College (Ky.) Friday afternoon at the Early Bird Classic in Millington, Tenn. The Tigers won 2-0 in game one behind a complete game, seven-inning shutout from their starter and took game two by a final score of 8-3, also in seven innings. Junior catcher/outfielder Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with two double, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk, while senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, a double and a walk.

Game One:

  • Orzech collected two hits, including a double, in three at-bats and made nine putouts with an assist behind the dish.
  • Sophomore pitcher Nico Saldias (Ajax, Ontario/Connors State/Pickering) made his second start of the season and lasted 5.0 innings with four hits, one run (unearned), one walk and eight strikeouts.
  • Junior pitcher Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) worked 0.2 innings of relief with two hits allowed and one run (unearned).
  • Sophomore pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) recorded the final out in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Junior pitcher Jimmy Fairley (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rock Valley/Huntley) pitched the seventh inning and posted a strikeout.
  • Georgetown broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 5th when a runner from third base scored on a passed ball. They added another run in the top of the 6th after an error by SXU allowed a runner to score from second base.

Game Two:

  • Hayes was 2-for-2 with two RBI, a double and a walk.
  • Sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) made his first start in the outfield for the Cougars and collected three hits in four at-bats with a double and a run scored.
  • Orzech was the designated hitter in game two and was 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI.
  • Junior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) took the loss (0-1) after 2.2 innings on the mound and allowing seven hits, three earned runs and three strikeouts.
  • Junior pitcher Caleb Ziehr (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) pitched 0.1 innings and gave up two hits, three runs (one earned), a walk and a strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Brendan Gill (Evergreen Park, Ill./Moraine Valley/Mount Carmel) made his Saint Xavier debut and logged 1.2 innings out of the bullpen with just two walks surrendered.
  • Freshman pitcher Osvaldo Ballesteros Jr. (Berwyn, Ill./St. Laurence), making his collegiate debut, saw an inning of action with no hits, two earned runs and three walks.
  • Sophomore pitcher Matt Boehm (Evergreen Park, Ill./Lewis/De La Salle) recorded the final out in the bottom of the 6th and allowed a hit in 0.1 innings.
  • GC scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd off an RBI double, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
  • SXU got two runs back in the next half inning when Dowling smacked a leadoff double and scored on Orzech's RBI single two batters later. Hayes drove in Orzech with an RBI base hit to make it 3-2 in the top of the 4th.
  • The Tigers added three runs in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI single and two sac flies.
  • Hayes belted an RBI double in the top of the 6th to cut the deficit in half, 6-3, however a two-out, two-run double by Georgetown in the home half of the inning would make the score 8-3.

Saint Xavier (0-5/0-0 CCAC) continues play in the Early Bird Classic on Saturday, February 11 in Millington Tenn., when they take on Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.) in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 pm central time.
