Box Score 2 Millington, Tenn. – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (2-5/0-0 CCAC) claimed its first two win of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.) Saturday afternoon at the Early Bird Classic in Millington, Tenn. The Cougars won 6-2 behind a solid pitching performance by sophomore pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard), while sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) and junior catcher/outfielder Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) each went 2-for-2 with two runs and a stolen base. The offense erupted for 17 runs in game two, highlighted by senior infielder Darren Zarrillo (Grapevine, Texas/Frank Phillips/Grapevine) who had two hits in two at-bats with three RBI and a run as a pinch-hitter in a nine-run top of the 5th.
Game One:
- Orzech added two walks and an RBI and Dowling also drew a walk.
- Junior outfielder Daniel Barrios (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) stole two bases, walked twice and scored two runs.
- Dougherty (1-0) had a final line of 5.0 innings, two hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
- Sophomore pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) worked a clean sheet in the bottom of the 6th, retiring all three batters he faced.
- Junior pitcher Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) tossed 1.0 inning and tallied a strikeout to end the game.
- SXU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Dowling scored on a passed ball. Zarrillo would make it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
- Barrios scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 2nd. A third passed ball scored Dowling to make in 4-0.
- The Hornets got two runs back in the top of the 3rd with a two-run single.
- Orzech drove in Barrios with an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th and senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) capped the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Two:
- Senior infielder Sam Ryan (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, a run and a stolen base.
- Senior outfielder Collin Woulfe (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) was 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and two walks.
- Evan Orzech finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
- Dowling doubled with two runs and an RBI while going 2-for-4.
- Hayes drew two walks, scored twice and doubled with an RBI in two at-bats.
- Senior infielder Joe Rycerz (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) was 1-for-2 with two runs, a walk and an RBI.
- Sophomore pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) made the start and lasted 1.2 innings with five hits allowed, five runs (two earned), a walk and a strikeout.
- Junior pitcher Max Smyth (Tinley Park, Ill./Illinois Central/Andrew) earned his first win as a Cougar (1-0) by working 2.1 innings of relief with one hit given up, one walk and two strikeouts.
- Scott tossed an inning with one hit, an unearned run, a walk and a strikeout.
- Sophomore pitcher Matt Boehm (Evergreen Park, Ill./Lewis/De La Salle) surrendered two hits in an inning out of the bullpen.
- Freshman pitcher Osvaldo Ballesteros Jr. (Berwyn, Ill./St. Laurence) recorded a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the 7th in his inning of work.
- HSSU went up 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI single and tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the 2nd via a two-run single, an RBI base hit and a balk with the bases loaded.
- Hayes lined an RBI double, and Evan Orezch scored after Hayes was caught stealing to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the 3rd. Dowling got another run back in the top of the 4th win an RBI double.
- Nine runs would cross the plate in the top of the 5th to give Saint Xavier a 12-6 advantage. Zarrillo and Ryan hit back-to-back RBI singles, Barrios lifted a sacrifice fly, Evan Orzech lined an RBI single up the middle and an error allowed another run to score, Rycerz was hit-by-pitch with the bases load, Woulfe drew a bases loaded walk and Zarrillo laced a two-run single.
- Harris-Stowe State scored on a balk in the bottom half of the inning.
- SXU plates five runs in the top of the 7th. Woulfe drove in a run and reached on an error, junior infielder Trevor Hausherr (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) hit an RBI single, Ryan drove in his second run of the game, freshman catcher Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) tallied his first collegiate RBI with a base hit and freshman pinch-hitter Josh Clark (Martensville, Saskatchewan/Vauxhall), making his collegiate debut, hit a sac fly for his first career RBI.
Saint Xavier (2-5/0-0 CCAC) travels to Georgetown, Ky. to play Huntington University (Ind.) in a doubleheader on Friday, February 17. Game one is scheduled to start at 9:00 am central.
