SXU Baseball Falls 5-1 in Road Contest to Indiana South Bend

South Bend, Ind. – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (9-15/1-2 CCAC) lost to Indiana University South Bend 5-1 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Sunday afternoon. The game was moved from IUSB's home field to Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind. Freshman outfielder Matthew Barreca (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) made the most out his collegiate debut by going 2-for-3 with an RBI while making the start in the outfield. Junior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) suffered the loss (1-4) after tossing 6.0 innings with five hits, four runs, three walks and a strikeout.

  • Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Junior catcher Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) doubled and was 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • Senior infielder Joe Rycerz (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) also had a double in four at-bats.
  • Sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
  • Junior pitcher Caleb Ziehr (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) threw 2.0 innings of relief, allowing two hits, one run, a walk and struck out one batter.
  • The Titans broke a scoreless tie with a one-out home run in the bottom of the 5th.
  • Indiana South Bend added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the 6th on a sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles.
  • Barreca, who singled in his first collegiate at-bat leading off the top of the 3rd, drove in a run with an infield single with two outs in the top of the 7th.
  • IUSB tacked on an RBI double in the bottom of the 8th to pull away for the win and take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.

Saint Xavier (9-15/1-2 CCAC) finishes its series with Indiana University South Bend with a doubleheader on Monday, March 20 at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field. In game one SXU will be the road team on the scoreboard and will be the home team in game two. The first game is slated for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
