Box Score CHICAGO – Junior infielder Trevor Hausherr (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) collected five RBI on the day and sophomore pitcher Nico Saldias (Ajax, Ontario/Connors State/Pickering) tied his season-high with eight strikeouts to record his second win of the season to help Saint Xavier University baseball (11-15/3-2 CCAC) sweep Indiana University South Bend in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader Monday afternoon to earn the series win, 2-1, at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Saldias (2-3) threw 5.0 innings with four hits, four runs (all unearned) and three walks in an 8-4 victory in game one and Hausherr clubbed a bases clearing double in a 13-3 triumph in game two. SXU was the road team on the scoreboard for game one as the series originally had the Titans hosting the doubleheader.
Game One:
- Freshman outfielder Matthew Barreca (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) went 2-for-2 with two RBI, a double and a walk.
- Hausherr had two RBI despite going hitless in three at-bats.
- Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) scored two runs with a walk while going 1-for-3
- Freshman designated hitter Jackson McFarland (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South Vigo) recorded his first collegiate hit and finished 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.
- Junior outfielder Daniel Barrios (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI.
- Sophomore pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) logged 2.0 innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one walk with two strikeouts.
- A two-run infield single gave Indiana South Bend a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.
- The Cougars responded with four runs in the top of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hausherr, a two-run double by Barreca and an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel).
- Saint Xavier added four more runs in the top of the 3rd. McFarland pulled an RBI base hit through the hole on the right side of the infield, Barrios slugged an RBI double, and Hausherr tallied an RBI on an error and another run would score to extend the lead to 8-2.
- IUSB scored twice in the bottom of the 3rd, both runs unearned, off an error and a wild pitch.
- Saldias and McCleery only allowed two base runners to reach safely over the final four innings to lock up the win.
Game Two:
- Hausherr went 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and a double.
- Junior catcher Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
- Hayes scored three runs after going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run.
- Senior infielder Declan Smyth (Evergreen Park, Ill./North Central/Evergreen Park) had two hits in four at-bats with two RBI, a run and a stolen base.
- Senior infielder Joe Rycerz (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) finished 1-for-5 with a two-run double.
- Sophomore pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) made the start and tossed 4.2 innings with two hits, two runs (one earned), four walks and two strikeouts but settled for a no decision.
- Sophomore pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) registered 1.1 innings of relief to earn his first win of the season (1-1) and didn't allow a base runner.
- Junior pitcher Max Smyth (Tinley Park, Ill./Illinois Central/Andrew) pitched 1.0 inning and surrendered one hit, one run and two walks.
- Hayes opened the scoring by coming around from second base on an error and Declan Smyth hit a sac fly to give SXU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd.
- An error and an RBI double allowed the Titans to tie the game in the top of the 3rd.
- The Cougars used an eight-run rally in the bottom of the 4th to build a 10-2 lead. Declan Smyth hit an RBI single, Evan Orzech sliced a two-run single past the third baseman, Barrios legged out an RBI infield single, Hausherr hammered a three-run double off the left field wall and freshman catcher Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) lined an RBI single to the gap in right center.
- Hayes slugged his first home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the 6th.
- Indiana South Bend got a run back in the top of the 7th on an RBI fielder's choice.
- Rycerz ended the game with a two-run double to centerfield in the bottom of the 7th for the sweep.
Saint Xavier (11-15/3-2 CCAC) travels to Davenport, Iowa to play St. Ambrose University on Friday, March 24. The nine-inning CCAC matchup is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
