Joe Rycerz (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) drove in five of the seven runs, including two off of a sacrifice fly that put the Cougars up 7-6 in the top of the 9th to lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team (12-15/4-2 CCAC) to a thrilling come from behind victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Friday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa. Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) earned the win in relief after logging 1.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout to improve his record to 2-0 on the mound this season.
- Sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Freshman outfielder Matthew Barreca (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) was 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
- Junior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) made the start and settled for a no decision, working 5.1 innings with six hits, three runs and two walks.
- Sophomore pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) pitched 1.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed one hit, three runs (two earned) and walked five batters.
- Sophomore pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) saw 0.1 innings a gave up a hit.
- The Fighting Bees scored twice in the bottom of the 1st on a two-out single.
- Dowling got Saint Xavier on the board in the top of the 3rd with an RBI groundout.
- A wild pitch extended the lead to 3-1 for St. Ambrose in the bottom of the 4th.
- Rycerz pulled a bases clearing three-run double down the left field line with two outs in the top of the 5th to give SXU a 4-3 advantage.
- SAU jumped back in front in the bottom of the 8th on a two-run double and added another run on a balk.
- Senior pinch hitter Patrick Doran (Evergreen Park, Ill./North Carolina Central/South Suburban/Evergreen Park) drew a walk with the bases loaded in the top of the 9th to cut the deficit to 6-5. Rycerz lifted a sac fly to right field that scored two runs as Dowling raced all the way home from second base.
- Yen allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 9th and the Fighting Bees sacrificed the runner over to put the tying run on second. However, Yen recorded a strikeout and induced a foul out to left field to notch the road win.
Saint Xavier (12-15/4-2 CCAC) caps the series with St. Ambrose University (Iowa) when they play a doubleheader at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field on Sunday, March 27. The first pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
