Box Score CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (12-16/4-3 CCAC) lost game one of a doubleheader, 7-3, to St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Sunday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. The second game was suspended in the bottom of the 5th with the Fighting Bees leading 7-3 with one out and a runner on first base before the game was halted due to lightning and heavy rain. Game two will resume at a later date.
- Senior designated hitter Joe Rycerz (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) collected two RBI and drew a walk while going 1-for-3 at the plate.
- Senior infielder Patrick Doran (Evergreen Park, Ill./North Carolina Central/South Suburban/Evergreen Park) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
- Senior infielder Declan Smyth (Evergreen Park, Ill./North Central/Evergreen Park) had two hits in four at-bats and scored two runs.
- Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Sophomore pitcher Nico Saldias (Ajax, Ontario/Connors State/Pickering) worked into the 6th inning and recorded the loss (2-4). He logged 5.1 innings and gave up six hits, seven runs, three walks and had two strikeouts.
- Junior pitcher Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) finished the top of the 6th with a hit and a strikeout.
- Junior pitcher Brendan Gill (Evergreen Park, Ill./Moraine Valley/Mount Carmel) walked one batter in his inning of work in the top of the 7th.
- Rycerz lined an RBI single back up the middle to give SXU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.
- Duran and Rycerz both worked bases loaded walks in the bottom of the 2nd to extend the lead to 3-0.
- SAU scored all seven of their runs in the top of the 6th. They got on the board with a two-run double down the right field line and tied the game with a bases loaded walk. St. Ambrose took the lead in the next at-bat on a two-run single that chased Saldias and would make it 7-3 with a two-out, two-run base hit before Yen rolled a groundout to third to end the inning.
Saint Xavier (12-16/4-3 CCAC) travels to Joliet, Ill. for a nine-inning contest against University of St. Francis on Tuesday, March 28. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
