Box Score CHICAGO – After falling behind 7-0 in the first six innings, the Saint Xavier University baseball team (13-17/5-4 CCAC) scored twice in both the seventh and eighth innings, however they couldn't come up with the equalizer in a 7-4 setback to Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Thursday afternoon at Richard R. Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) had the hot bat for the Cougars, collecting three hits in three at-bats with two RBI and a walk. Senior infielder
Darren Zarrillo (Grapevine, Texas/Frank Phillips/Grapevine) also drove in two runs in five trips at the plate with a base hit.
- Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) was a tough out, going 3-for-5 with a double.
- Sophomore pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) made the start (3-3) and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, three walks and striking out four batters.
- Sophomore pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) worked 1.2 innings of relief with two hits, three runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
- Junior pitcher Caleb Ziehr (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) logged 4.0 innings out of the bullpen and gave up just three hits, one walk and posted four strikeouts.
- The Crimson Wave took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd on a two-out RBI single.
- Calumet St. Joseph added three runs in the top of the 4th after a bases loaded walk and a two-run single.
- CCSJ tallied a run on a double play in the top of the 5th and tacked on two runs in the top of the 6th off a sacrifice fly and an RBI base hit.
- Zarrillo pulled a two-run single down the third base line, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.
- Orzech flared a two-run single to right field in the bottom of the 8th to cut the deficit to 7-4. SXU would get the go-ahead run to the plate, however a lineout to right ended the threat.
- The Cougars brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but the Crimson Wave got a fly out to end the ballgame.
Saint Xavier (13-17/5-4 CCAC) is scheduled to travel to Whiting, Ind. to conclude the three-game series with Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1. The first game is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
