SXU Tripped up by No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene, 9-0

Fayette, Mo. – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (5-10/0-0 CCAC) was held to one hit in a 9-0 shutout by No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene University (Kan.) in their first game of the Central Methodist Tournament Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Mo. Junior outfielder Daniel Barrios (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) collected the lone hit for the Cougars with a double in the bottom of the 6th and he was hit-by-pitch in his first plate appearance in the bottom of the 4th.

  • Sophomore pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) suffered the loss (3-1) after going 3.0 innings with 10 hits, nine runs (all earned) and three walks.
  • Freshman pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) made his collegiate debut in the top of the 4th and tossed 3.1 innings of relief allowing just three hits, one walk and striking out four batters.
  • Junior pitcher Brendan Gill (Evergreen Park, Ill./Moraine Valley/Mount Carmel) recorded the final two outs on just three pitches by inducing a double play to end the top of the 7th.
  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the 1st after a two-run home run, an RBI single and a three-run home run.
  • MNU added a run with an RBI single in the top of the 3rd and capped the scoring in the top of the 4th with two more RBI base hits.

Saint Xavier (5-10/0-0 CCAC) takes on host No. 14 Central Methodist University (Mo.) in single-game action at 5:00 pm tomorrow in the CMU Tournament in Fayette, Mo.
