Duran Homers Twice as SXU Splits DH with Olivet Nazarene

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bourbonnais, Ill. – Senior infielder Patrick Doran (Evergreen Park, Ill./NC Central/DuPage/South Suburban/Evergreen Park) highlighted a 12-run top of the 7th in game one with a three-run home run to help guide the Saint Xavier University baseball team (17-20/9-7 CCAC) to a 16-6 victory over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in game one of their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Watson Field in Bourbonnais, Ill. Duran would also club a three-run home run in game two, however SXU lost by a score of 8-6. In the first game, the Cougars entered the top of the 7th trailing 6-4 and would send 10 batters to the plate and score seven runs before recording an out.

Game One:

  • Senior infielder Darren Zarrillo (Grapevine, Texas/Frank Phillips/Grapevine) was 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored, a double and a stolen base.
  • Duran finished 1-for-3 and added a walk.
  • Senior designated hitter Joe Rycerz (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs, a home run and a sacrifice fly.
  • Senior infielder Declan Smyth (Evergreen Park, Ill./North Central/Evergreen Park) collected two hits in five at-bats with three runs scored, two RBI and a walk.
  • Sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) was 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple and an RBI.
  • Sophomore pitcher Nico Saldias (Ajax, Ontario/Connors State/Pickering) made the start and lasted 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (four earned), four walks and had four strikeouts.
  • Freshman pitcher Heath Mann (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) threw 2.2 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory (1-0). He gave up two hits, one run, one walk and recorded one strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Jimmy Fairley (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rock Valley/Huntley) pitched the bottom of the 7th and tallied a walk and a strikeout.
  • Saint Xavier jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a sac fly off the bat of Rycerz and a two-run double to the gap in left center by Zarrillo.
  • The Tigers responded with an RBI single and scored on an error in the bottom of the 1st to make it a one-run game.
  • ONU tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo home run.
  • Rycerz put the Cougars back up, 4-3, with a solo home run of his own in the top of the 3rd.
  • Olivet Nazarene retied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly. They would hit another sac fly in the bottom of the 4th and add an RBI base hit in the bottom of the 6th.
  • Smyth cut the deficit to 6-5 with an RBI single to start the rally in the top of the 7th. Zarrillo tied the game with an RBI single to leftfield and freshman catcher Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) put SXU ahead 8-6 with a two-run base hit. Three batters would all be hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and junior pinch hitter Trevor Hausherr (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) extended the lead with a sacrifice fly. Smyth picked up another RBI, this time off an error, and Duran would belt a three-run home run to cap the scoring.

Game Two:

  • Junior outfielder Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) drove in a pair of runs and went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Rycerz finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
  • Junior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) took the mound in game two and tossed 5.0 innings, surrendering eight hits, three runs and walking two batters.
  • Sophomore Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) pitcher 0.1 innings with three hits, two runs and a walk.
  • Junior Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) took the loss (2-1) after 2.0 innings of relief with three hits, three runs, a walk and three strikeouts.
  • Sophomore pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) recorded the final two outs of the bottom of the 8th with two hits allowed and a strikeout.
  • Duran launched his second three-run home run of the day in the top of the 2nd to give SXU the early lead.
  • The Tigers homered in the bottom of the 3rd to get on the board.
  • Evan Orzech lined a two-run single back up the middle in the top of the 5th and Smyth drove in a run on a groundout to put Saint Xavier ahead 6-1.
  • ONU scored twice in the bottom of the 5th on a pair of RBI singles.
  • A balk and an RBI triple in the bottom of the 6th made it a one-run game.
  • Olivet Nazarene tied the game in the bottom of the 7th with a leadoff home run. They would take the lead for good in the bottom of the 8th with an RBI double that chased Yen and the Tigers would add a run on an RBI single.

Saint Xavier (17-20/9-7 CCAC) welcomes Judson Univesity (Ill.) to Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field on Friday, April 14. The nine-inning contest in slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
