SXU Baseball Outlasts Roosevelt in 1-0 Victory

Box Score Crestwood, Ill. – On an afternoon where hits were hard to come by, both teams combined for five hits, the Saint Xavier University baseball team (15-18/7-5 CCAC) defeated Roosevelt University by a score of 1-0 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Friday afternoon at Ozinga Field in Crestwood, Ill. Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) collected both hits for SXU and scored the lone run in the contest. Junior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) worked 4.0 innings of relief to come away with the win (3-5), while junior pitcher Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) earned his first save of the season.
  • Freshman catcher Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) tallied his ninth RBI of the year when he hit into a fielder's choice in the top of the 7th. He finished the day 0-for-3 with a walk.
  • Sophomore pitcher Nico Saldias (Ajax, Ontartio/Connors State/Pickering) made his 11th start of the season and went 3.0 innings without allowing a hit, walking one batter and posting six strikeouts.
  • Vargas surrendered two hits while not letting a Laker baserunner advance beyond second base. Yen pitched the final two innings and gave up just one hit.
  • The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the 1st inning by drawing three walks, however they were unable to score.
  • Hayes recorded the first hit of the game for Saint Xavier when he singled through the left side of the infield with one out in the top of the 7th. Senior infielder Darren Zarrillo (Grapevine, Texas/Frank Phillips/Grapevine) put down a sacrifice bunt and reached base safely on an error. Senior pinch hitter Sam Ryan (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Conant) worked a walk before Orzech legged out a ground ball to shortstop to stay out of the double play and scored Hayes.
  • Hayes led off the top of the 9th with a base hit. Zarillo sacrificed him over and Hayes would take third on a wild pitch but was left stranded.
  • Yen gave up a one out base hit in the bottom of the 9th and would roll back-to-back groundballs to Zarrillo at third to give SXU the win in game one of the three game series.

Saint Xavier (15-18/7-5 CCAC) concludes its series with Roosevelt University (Ill.) on Saturday, April 8 with a doubleheader at Richard R. Ferrell Field. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
