Dowling & Hayes Pace SXU in DH Split with Roosevelt

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHICAGO – Sophomore outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) finished the day 5-for-8 with three runs scored and a double, while Senior infielder Patrick Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Parkland/Brother Rice) went 2-for-5 with two RBI, two runs, two walks and a double to help Saint Xavier University baseball (16-19/8-6 CCAC) earned a split with Roosevelt University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Hayes broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI double enroute to a 5-3 victory in game one. Dowling tallied three hits in five at-bats with two runs and a double in a 12-5 defeat in game two.

Game One:

  • Hayes was 2-for-3 with two runs and Dowling was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Junior pitcher Caleb Ziehr (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) started for the Cougars and tossed 4.0 innings with seven hits, two runs and struck out four batters but would settle for the no decision.
  • Sophomore pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) moved his record to 4-3 on the season after working 3.0 innings of relief and allowed just one hit, one run, two walks and had a strikeout.
  • Senior infielder Darren Zarrillo (Grapevine, Texas/Frank Phillips/Grapevine) lined a comebacker off the pitcher to score Hayes in the bottom of the 2nd to give SXU a 1-0 lead. Senior outfielder Sean Haddlesey (Ann Arbor, Mich./Albion/Skyline) made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Lakers got a run back in the top of the 3rd on an RBI base hit down the third base line.
  • Junior designated hitter Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) put Saint Xavier up 3-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • RU chipped away with an RBI single in the top of the 4th and tied the game on an RBI base hit in the top of the 5th.
  • Hayes sliced an RBI double down the right field line and scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior infielder Declan Smyth (Evergreen Park, Ill./North Central/Evergreen Park) in the bottom of the 6th.
  • Dougherty worked a 1-2-3 top of the 7th to give the Cougars the series win.

Game Two:

  • Freshman pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) took the mound to start game two and pitched an inning with four hits, five runs and a walk.
  • Sophomore pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) logged 4.2 innings out of the bullpen and surrendered 10 hits, six runs and had three strikeouts.
  • Sophomore pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) threw 3.0 innings of relief with five hits, one run and one strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Brendan Gill (Evergreen Park, Ill./Moraine Valley/Mount Carmel) allowed a hit before getting a fielder's choice groundout to end the top of the 9th.
  • Roosevelt scored five times in the top of the 1st on a sac fly, a three-run home run and a solo home run.
  • Senior infielder Patrick Doran (Evergreen Park, Ill./NC Central/DuPage/South Suburban/Evergreen Park, Hayes and Smyth all drew bases loaded walks and freshman catcher Aaron Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) lifted a sacrifice fly to pull SXU within a run at 5-4 in the bottom of the 1st.
  • The Lakers tacked on two runs in the top of the 2nd off an RBI double and a run-scoring double play.
  • Dowling led off the bottom of the 2nd with a double and scored when Evan Orzech collected an RBI on a groundout.
  • RU added a run in the top of the 5th on an RBI base hit, three runs in the top of the 6th off an RBI double and a two-run home run and scored a run on a caught stealing in the top of the 9th.

Saint Xavier (16-19/8-6 CCAC) travels to Bourbonnais, Ill. to take on Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 11. Game one is scheduled for an 11:00 am first pitch.
