Laba Earns All-Tournament; SXU Places 7th at Midwest Collegiate

Clinton Township, Mich. – Junior Jason Laba (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) finished fifth overall with a total of 1,106 pins to earn All-Tournament for the Saint Xavier University men's bowling team on day one of the 54th annual Brunswick Midwest Collegiate Championship at Imperial Lanes in Clinton Township, Mich. Laba helped the Cougars to a seventh place finish out of 51 programs to earn a spot in the eight-team championship tournament with 8,240 pins after 16 Baker Games on Sunday. SXU was in seventh on Saturday after the individual portion of the tournament with 5,048 pins and they added 3,192 pins on Sunday. In the quarterfinals, Saint Xavier lost to No. 2 seed Webber International University (Fla.) 2-0 (161-248, 175-225). No. 6 St. Ambrose University (Iowa) defeated No. 1 Purdue University (Ind.) 2-0 (204-192, 260-194).
  • In the Baker Games on Sunday, the Cougars featured a lineup of six bowlers: senior Daniel Esguerra (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech), senior Bobby Habetler (Park Ridge, Ill./Indiana Tech/St. Patrick), senior Spencer Mosher (Ormond Beach, Fla./Concordia/Seabreeze) junior Tyler Pedersen (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and sophomore Joseph Blonski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest).
  • SXU bowled an average of 199.5 across 16 Baker Games, eclipsing 200 or more pins eight times, with a high of 264 in game 11. Their other 200-pin games came in game one (212), game two (249), game three (214), game six (214), game seven (222), game 12 (222) and game 14 (217).
  • Laba rolled an average score of 221.2 in five games. He hit a high of 260 pins in game one, along with 216 pins in game three, 257 in game four and 207 in game five.
  • Habetler placed 16th with a total of 1,075 pins in five games. He posted an average of 215.0 pins with a high of 235 in game one. Habetler followed with 215 pins in game two, 222 in game three and 216 in game four.
  • Esguerra collected 940 pins, averaging 188.0 in five games. He knocked down a high of 212 pins in game three.
  • Mosher bowled in four games, coming away with 816 pins for an average of 204.0. He struck a high of 234 pins in game four while also hitting 222 pins in game three.
  • Pedersen competed in four games as well. He tallied 753 pins with an average of 188.3. Pederson toppled a high of 223 pins in game one.
  • Freshman Dylan Alvarado (Lynwood, Ill./Thornwood) made his collegiate debut, striking 214 pins in game five.
  • Junior Andrew Rossini (Streamwood, Ill./South Elgin) saw action in game one, hitting 144 pins.
Saint Xavier competes in the two-day Leatherneck Classic hosted by Western Illinois University that begins on Saturday, November 8 in Rockford, Ill.
