Esguerra Earns All-Tournament at Warhawk Open

Addison, Ill. – Senior Daniel Esguerra (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) collected 1,128 pins on day one of the Warhawk Open hosted by University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Ill. for a fifth-place finish, and he earned All-Tournament recognition for the No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University men's bowling team. Esguerra's efforts, along with his teammates, slotted the Cougars into sixth place out of 25 teams on Saturday with 5,136 pins. On Sunday afternoon, SXU competed in 16 Baker Games, adding 3,127 pins for a total of 8,263 pins to claim a spot in the eight-team tournament championship as the No. 6 seed. Saint Xavier took on No. 3 Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in the quarterfinals, losing 2-1 (170-193, 199-184, 145-195) in the best-of-three match. In the championship, No. 2 Mount Mercy University (Iowa) defeated top seed, and host, Wisconsin-Whitewater 2-1 (225-236, 255-191, 226-183).
  • In the Baker Games, the Cougars rotated seven players into the lineup: Esguerra and senior Bobby Habetler (Park Ridge, Ill./Indiana Tech/St. Patrick) bowled in all 16 games, while junior Jason Laba (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), junior Tyler Pedersen (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), junior Andrew Rossini (Streamwood, Ill./South Elgin), sophomore Joseph Blonski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and freshman Dylan Alvarado (Lynwood, Ill./Thornwood) all saw action.
  • SXU averaged a score of 195.4 in the Baker Games, hitting a high of 276 pins in game three. They also surpassed the 200-pin mark in game four (245), game 10 (225), game 15 (207) and game 16 (234).
  • Esguerra rolled an average score of 225.6 and he knocked down 200 or more pin in four of the five games. Esguerra hit a high of 246 pins in both games one and two, respectively, followed by 217 pins in game three and 234 pins in game five.
  • Habetler was 15th overall with a total of 1,076 pins, averaging 215.2 pins in five games. He struck a high of 243 pins in game two, and eclipsed 200 or more pins in game one (212), game three (214) and game four (213).
  • Pedersen had a Top 25 draw as well, finishing 21st with 1,053 pins in across five games. He had an average score of 210.6 with a high of 232 pins in game one. Pederson hit 210 pins in game three, 213 in game four and 222 in game five.
  • Laba was the fourth Saint Xavier bowler to find a spot in the Top 25, claiming 23rd overall with 1,046 pins. He averaged 209.2 pins per game with a high of 268 in game three. Laba followed that with a score of 217 pins in game four.
  • Alvarado competed in games two and three, hitting 181 and 142 pins, respectively. Blonski recorded a score of 190 pins in game five, senior Spencer Mosher (Ormond Beach, Fla./Concordia/Seabreeze) knocked down 172 pins in game four, while Rossini collected 148 pins in game one.
No. 8 Saint Xavier travels to Las Vegas, Nev. for a pair of tournaments at South Point Casino. They participate in the two-day Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invite starting on Thursday, December 18, followed by the two-day Collegiate Shoot-Out starting on Saturday, December 20.
