Rock Island, Ill. – The Saint Xavier University men's golf team finished ninth out of 23 competing teams with a two-day score of 590 (294 & 296 for a +14) at the Augustana University (Ill.) Highland Championship at Highland Springs Municipal Golf Course this weekend in Rock Island, Ill. Junior
Talon Hawk (Athens, Ohio/Morro Bay) tied with three other golfers for a tie for eighth by finishing at even par at 144 (70, 74). He was -2 under after day one, draining five birdie putts. Hawk birdied the Par-Five first hole, the Par-Four second hole, the Par-Three third hole, the Par-Five 15
th hole and the Par-Four 16
th hole. He added four more birdies on Sunday, on the third hole, the Par-Four 10
th hole, the Par-Five 11
th hole and the Par-Four 12
th hole. The Cougars also fielded a 'B' Team that placed tied for 21
st at 631 (319, 312 for a +55).
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the Augustana University (Ill.) 'B' Team tied for first, both shooting 572 (-4). Karsen Kruse for UW-Eau Claire and Anis Rezzoug for Augustana each shot 68 on both days to tie for first individually.
- Junior Roman Johnson (Lone Rock, Wis./Highland/Richland Center) tied for 12th overall in his first tournament for SXU, shooting a two-day score of 145 (+1). He was even par after round one with a birdie on the first hole, making an eagle putt on the Par-Five sixth hole, and birdies on the 11th and 15th holes, respectively. Johnson shot a 73 on day two with three birdies on the third hole, the Par-Four fifth hole and the 16th hole.
- Junior Nathan Kwiatkowski (Lockport, Ill./DuPage/Lockport Township) as made his debut for Saint Xavier, tying for 37th with a total score of 149 (+5). He carded 74 on Saturday with three birdie putts on the first, third and 11th holes. Kwiatkowki shot a 75 in the final round while sinking four birdies on the second, third, fifth and 11th holes.
- Senior Joey Glennon (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tied for 56th with a two-day score of 152 (+8). He drained an eagle putt on the second hole, followed by a birdie on the third hole for a round of 78 on day one. Glennon lowered his score by four strokes on Sunday, shooting a 74, with a birdie on the sixth hole, eagling the 11th hole, and another birdie on the 15th hole.
- Sophomore Thor Hock (Palos Park, Ill./Brother Rice) finished in a tie for 75th while competing with the 'B' Team, posting a score of 155 (+11). He started the tournament with a round of 73, making birdies on the first hole, the Par-Four seventh hole, the Par-Four ninth hole, the 12th hole and the 15th hole. Hock shot on 82 in round two, sinking a pair of birdies on the third and 15th holes.
- Sophomore Ryne Shields (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice), also competing with the 'B' squad, tied for 81st just a shot behind his teammate at 156 (+12). He finished the first 18-hole loop with a score of 82, birding on the second and 12th holes. Shields lowered his score by eight shots with a round of 74 thanks to four birdies on the Par-Three fourth hole, the seventh hole, the ninth hole and the 11th hole.
- Freshman Stone Hawk (Athens, Ohio/Morro Bay) tied for 87th in his collegiate debut, shooting a 157 (+13) for the 'B' Team. He shot an 81 on Saturday, sinking a birdie on the second hole. Hawk shaved five shots off his score on day two, draining a birdie on the Par-Four 18th hole.
- Senior Dan Stood (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) tied for 99th, collecting a two-day tally of 160 (+16). He completed the first round with a score of 83. Stood improved by six strokes in round two, carding a 77, after he sank an eagle putt on the 11th hole and making a birdie on the 16th hole.
- Fifth-year senior Jack Bullington (Evergreen Park, Ill./Trinity Christian/Marist) tied for 112th in his Cougar debut with a two-day mark of 164 (+20). He finished day one with a score of 83. Bullington made a birdie on the 11th hole, with a round of 81 on Sunday.
- Freshman Conor Brandt (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) shot a two-day score of 168 (+24) in his first collegiate tournament. He shot a score of 87 on Saturday, sinking a birdie on the third hole. Brandt took six shots off his score on the final day with a round of 81, making an eagle putt on the seventh hole.
Saint Xavier travels to Metamora, Ill. to compete in the two-day Illinois Central College Cougar Fall Classic at Metamora Fields Golf Course that begins on Tuesday, September 8 with tee-times starting at 9:00 am.
