John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) claimed the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week awards, respectively, for the Saint Xavier University baseball team (14-8/5-3 CCAC) when the awards were announced by the league office Tuesday morning. Martz threw a complete game with nine strikeouts in a 6-1 victory in game two of the four game series with Indiana University South Bend, a series the Cougars swept. Simecek played in all four games, batting .400 (6-for-15) with a .438 on-base percentage, and he slugged 1.000, belting three home runs. It's the second CCAC Player of the Week win for Simecek this season, while Martz earns his first CCAC Pitcher of the Week award.
- Martz went the distance, throwing 7.0 innings and giving up just one hit, one run (unearned) with two walks. His nine strikeouts were the second-most in a game this season. Martz improved his record to 2-1 on the year.
- Simecek scored six runs with six RBI, three stolen bases and a walk. He also pitched an inning, allowing one hit, one earned run, a walk and recording a strikeout. Simecek cracked two home runs with three RBI, three runs and two steals in the series opener, a 10-2 triumph. He homered again in game two to aid Martz. Simecek had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run in an 8-4 win in game three, and he capped the week with an RBI while going 0-for-4 in an 11-9 victory in the series finale.
Saint Xavier (14-8/5-3 CCAC) travels to Elgin, Ill. for a CCAC doubleheader on Tuesday, March 24. The games were originally scheduled for March 17, but where postponed due to wintery conditions. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 11:00 am.
