Carroll & Pringle Lead No. 15 SXU Past TIU, 35-6

Deerfield, Ill. – Junior defensive back Ron Carroll (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) returned two interceptions for touchdowns and senior wide receiver Justin Pringle (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) hauled in a career-best three touchdown passes to help give No. 15 Saint Xavier University football (6-2, 4-0 MSFA Midwest) a 35-6 victory over Trinity International University (Ill.) in a Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League contest Saturday afternoon at Frazier Field in Deerfield, Ill. SXU has now won six consecutive games, with two wins over NAIA Top 25 teams during their winning streak.

Carroll set a program record by becoming the first player to return two interceptions for touchdowns in a game. He joins teammate, junior defensive back, Kevin Countryman (Morris, Ill./Providence Catholic) as the only players to return two interceptions for scores in a season as Countryman had returns vs. Siena Heights University (Mich.) on September 17 and at No. 16 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on September 24. Pringle is the first Saint Xavier wide receiver to catch three touchdown passes in a game since former standout Nick Czeszewski (2016-19) caught three touchdown passes also against TIU on October 5, 2019.

  • Junior quarterback Stuart Ross (Springfield, Ill./Springfield Southeast) was 18-for-31 for 249 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
  • Pringle finished the afternoon with eight receptions for 140 yards and averaged 17.5 yards per grab.
  • Freshman running back Mario Price (Chicago Heights, Ill./Calumet New Tech) recorded 74 rushing yards on 11 carries, including a career long run of 39 yards.
  • Junior kicker Peyton Benes (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was 5-for-5 on extra point attempts and had six kickoffs for an average of 59.5 yards per kick with two touchbacks.
  • Junior linebacker Finn Brandon (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) had a team-high seven tackles (two solos) with a tackle for loss for two yards.
  • In addition to his two interceptions, Carroll made six tackles (two solos) and had a pass breakup.
  • Freshman linebacker Terry Elias (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) (four tackles, junior defensive lineman Ayobami Arokoyo (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) (three tackles) and freshman defensive lineman Art Hrvatin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) each posted sacks.
  • Senior defensive lineman Jaleel Holloway (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) collected four tackles (one solo), 1.5 tackles for loss for three yards and had a fumble recovery returned 11 yards.
  • The Cougars scored on their opening drive, going 55 yards on four plays with Ross finding Pringle in the corner of the endzone for a 7-0 lead.
  • Ross and Pringle hooked up for a 46-yard touchdown pass at the 4:29 mark of the first quarter to extend the lead to 14-0, capping a three-play 73-yard drive.
  • Carroll set the SXU record for longest interception return, taking a 'Pick-six' 73 yards to the endzone to put Saint Xavier up 21-0 with 7:02 remaining in the opening half.
  • The Trojans used a 10-play 80-yard drive resulting in a 44-yard touchdown pass at the 10:23 mark of the third quarter, however the extra point hit the upright and was no good.
  • After being pinned down at their own two-yard line, the Cougars went the distance on 11 plays and finished the 98-yard drive with another Ross to Pringle connection, this time from 39 yards out, in the final minute of the third period to go up 28-6.
  • Carroll came away with his second interception of the game, a six-yard return for a scored with 7:34 left in regulation to cap the scoring.

No. 15 Saint Xavier (6-2/4-0 MSFA) makes its way to Streamwood, Ill. to take on Judson University (Ill.) in a MSFA Midwest League matchup on Saturday, October 29. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm kickoff.
