Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 11 ranked Saint Xavier University football team (0-1, 0-0 MSFA Midwest) started the 2022 season on the wrong foot, falling 57-0 to NCAA D-II University of Indianapolis (Ind.) Saturday evening at Key Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. in the season opener for both programs. Senior wide receiver Justin Pringle (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) collected 116 all-purpose yards for the Cougars (53 kick return yards, 53 receiving yards and 10 rushing yards) and had one punt for 36 yards. Junior defensive back Ron Carroll (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) led the SXU defense with seven tackles (five solos) and had a tackle for loss for three yards.
- Junior quarterback Stuart Ross (Springfield, Ill./Springfield Southeast) went 16-for-27 for 93 yards, threw three interceptions and was sacked three times.
- Pringle had a team-best six catches for 53 yards, with a long of 23 yards.
- Junior wide receiver Brandt Hixson (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) made five receptions for 36 yards for SXU.
- Freshman running back Mario Price (Chicago Heights, Ill./Calumet New Tech), making his collegiate debut, had five carries for 18 yards.
- Junior wide receiver/punter Joe Polselli (Evergreen Park, Ill./St. Rita) recoded four punts for 172 yards, averaging 43.0 yards per punt and had one land inside the 20-yard line.
- Junior running back/punter Matthew Chavers III (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) punted three times for 142 yards with a long of 53 yards.
- Junior defensive back Tyler Barnette (Richton Park, Ill./Joliet West) made six tackles (five solos).
- Senior linebacker Joey Markasovic (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) collected six solo tackles and a tackle for loss for one yard.
- Senior defensive lineman Payton Campbell (Round Lake Beach, Ill./Grayslake North) registered five tackles (three solos), two quarterback hurries, 1.5 tackles for loss for three yards, a pass breakup and 0.5 sacks for two yards.
- The Greyhounds opened the scoring on an 88-yard rushing touchdown after a Chavers III punt placed UIndy at their own 12-yard line at the 6:13 mark of the 1st quarter.
- Indianapolis made it 14-0 after a six-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the opening period.
- UIndy took advantage of a Saint Xavier miscue and scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 11:44 left in the 2nd quarter.
- A bad snap by SXU sailed out of the back of the endzone for a safety on the next possession to make it 23-0.
- The Greyhounds went up 30-0 in the ensuing drive after a 23-yard touchdown pass at the 10:07 mark.
- UIndy scored with just :14 left in the opening half on a nine-yard touchdown pass to carry a 37-0 lead into halftime.
- A 36-yard field goal and a six-yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter put Indianapolis up 47-0.
- The Greyhounds scored off a 10-yard rushing touchdown and capped the scoring on a 34-yard field goal in the 4th quarter.
No. 11 Saint Xavier (0-1/0-0 MSFA) hosts St. Thomas University (Fla.) in their home opener on September 10 at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 pm kickoff.
